gear當名詞，能當齒輪等同gearwheel，也能當車子的檔數，例如：reverse gear 倒車檔、shift into top gear 轉到最高檔，開足了馬力、形容加速進行的意思，gear也用做裝備、用具，例如：headgear頭盔、firefighter gear消防員裝備，當動詞時，gear有調整、備好裝備，gear up則有準備好，為了能馬上行動，也有蓄勢待發的意思。
