根據牛津字典，動詞 cripple /ˈkrɪp!/ 是從另一個動詞 creep /krip/（爬行）演變而來，cripple 的本意就是「讓……在地上爬」。要特別注意後面的受詞；如果是人，就是「使……跛腳、殘廢」，如果是事物，就是「重創、打趴……」的意思。此外 cripple 也可以直接當名詞，指「瘸子、殘廢、半身不遂的患者」。
除了用 cripple 形容遭受重創，你還可以用：
- devastate /ˈdɛvəsˌtet/ →「使荒蕪、嚴重破壞」的意思，較 damage 嚴重，破壞程度大約是百分之 80
- ruin /ˈruɪn/ → 本義是讓建物或城市「徹底毀滅、成為廢墟」，毀壞程度近百分之百
- wipe out /waɪp//aʊt/ → 動詞 wipe 是「擦拭」，後面的介系詞 out 強化了動詞的意思；形容一個事物如同被抹布徹底擦掉一樣，即「完全摧毀」
