名詞 takedown 的原型是片語動詞 take down，指的是某個文件、照片或網站因為觸法或不符合規定，而遭到政府強制移除，也就是新聞報導裡很常見的「下架」。過往 take town 都指「取下、撕下」張貼在牆壁或佈告欄上的海報或公告，近年來則多用在「撤除」網站或把某人從公開場合「除」名。要注意的是，take down 尚有「打敗、逮補、肢解、把……記錄下來」等字義，必須根據上下文才不會誤判。
