🎓 深度講解
動詞 recall 是由字首 re- 與字根 call 組合而成，字義的大方向不脫「再次呼叫、叫回來」的範疇。這個字最主要的意思是「回想、使……想起」，也就是把原本記在腦中、卻暫時遺忘的事情「再次找回來」。第二個意思為今天的關鍵字，即呼叫某個人或物，要求他「回到原來的位置」；用在外交、商業等正式場合，就是「召回、收回」。
再額外介紹兩個 recall 的相似詞：withdraw 跟 revoke。動詞 withdraw 最原始的意思是「把給出去的東西拿回來」，後衍伸出「撤退、撤銷、提領」等解釋。在這則新聞事件中，recall 可以直接替換成 withdraw，意思不變，只是比較口語化。動詞 revoke 則是「讓原本具有法律效力的事物完全失效」，即中文裡的「吊銷、廢止」，後面接續的受詞僅限於事或物，不可以是人，因此召回駐外使節就不能寫成 revoke an envoy。
