慣用語 raise one’s hackles 是「惹某人生氣」，所以 raise many people’s hackles 就是「犯眾怒」的意思。名詞 hackle /ˈhæk!/ 指鳥獸頸部後面的羽毛或毛髮，當受到驚嚇或遭到激怒時，這撮毛會自動豎立起來，作為威嚇對方的訊號。因此 raise one’s hackles 就是借用動物的這種生理反應，來形容一個人被惹火時的樣貌。這裡的 hackle 固定加 s，因為是一撮毛髮而不是一根。
