片語 war of words 顧名思義就是「口水戰、唇槍舌戰」。其實 war of words 一開始專指政客、政黨或利益團體之間，彼此用沒有營養又沒有建設性的話語相互攻訐；後來普遍形容人與人之間的口誅筆伐，且通常都是持續一段時間的論戰，換言之一次性爭吵不會是 war of words。這裡的 word 固定複數型，s 要記得加。
另一個同樣生動又好記的「口水戰」是 shouting match。名詞 match /mætʃ/ 是運動、競技類的「比賽、對戰」，當對話雙方陷入一場「比大聲」的叫囂，意味著這個爭吵是相當激烈的。不過 shouting 在這裡不見得是「吼叫」，它比較像是「吵鬧不已、爭執不休」的比喻。
