auction (拍賣)，源於拉丁文，有「增加」的意思，在以前會舉辦適婚女子的拍賣，競買人會互相出價，現在則是用於買方對中意的商品出價，拍賣官則會將商品出售給支付最高價的人，另外我們常說「清倉拍賣」，也是拍賣，但因為沒有互相出價，則不建議用auction而是用sale（拍賣；特賣），例如：clearance sale（清倉拍賣）或garage sale(在車庫前的舊物拍賣）。
