strain跟variant都是在討論流行病學時經常會使用到的名詞。大家在國高中時可能學過一個例句：I strained my ankle，我扭傷我的腳了。不過在生物學上，strain的意思完全不一樣，它是一個名詞，指的是一種品系，例如最近在英國發現的新種新冠肺炎病毒，即是新冠肺炎下的一個品系。這個字眼也被借用到社會科學裡面，意思近似於留派。舉例來說，我們可以說a new strain of feminism的意思是一種新流派的女性主義。
