形容詞 ugly 應該是很多酷粉們一開始學會的英文單字之一吧？它除了形容人的外貌醜陋、物件樣式不好看，還有相當多延伸的意思。今天的關鍵字「get ugly」通常以「things get ugly」的句構呈現，表示一件事或一個狀態朝向極度負面、且外力無法控制的方向發展，最後的結果通常令人遺憾；可以翻譯成「事態惡化、事件發展急轉直下、事情變得一發不可收拾」。
這裡補充兩個類似的用法：一個是口語英文很常聽到的「get worse」，可用來形容病況、表現或事態每況愈下。第二個是比較難的動詞 deteriorate /dɪˈtɪrɪə,ret/，說明情況的惡化、品質的下降、道德的敗壞等，也是個相當好用的字。
